A wrong turn that changed everything.
In 1998, Gabriel Castano was just 20 years old — ambitious, determined, and eager to find his first opportunity. He had an appointment at FedEx, but there was just one problem: he got lost trying to find the place.
After driving around trying to figure out where he was going, Gabriel decided to stop and ask for directions. He walked into a nearby business, approached the front desk, and asked the secretary if she could point him in the right direction.
It had already been a frustrating day, and by the time Gabriel walked through the door, he was a little ruffled, frustrated, and ready to get on with his day.
Little did he know, walking through that door would change the course of his life.
That was when Carlos Ortega walked by.
Carlos was a manager at the company. He overheard the conversation, stepped in, and asked Gabriel a simple question:
“Hey kid, are you looking for a job?”
Gabriel replied, “Yes. I’m just lost.”
Carlos smiled and said, “Well, come back here. I’m looking for somebody to hire.”
What started as a 20-minute conversation turned into an interview — and eventually, a job.
Neither of them knew it at the time, but that conversation would become the beginning of a friendship that would last more than 28 years.
